ESL IEM Cologne 2025: Invited Teams and Format Confirmed

24 Elite Teams to Battle for $1M Prize Pool at Germany's Premier Esports Event

The esports world is buzzing with excitement as ESL has officially announced the complete invite list for Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Cologne 2025, one of Counter-Strike’s most prestigious tournaments. Set to take place from July 23 to August 3, 2025, at the iconic LANXESS Arena in Cologne, Germany, this tournament promises to deliver electrifying competition among the world’s best CS2 teams.

The tournament features an impressive $1 million USD prize pool, with the champion taking home $400,000. ESL has confirmed invitations for 24 teams based on the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) rankings as of June 2, 2025. Among the invited powerhouses are VitalityMOUZTeam SpiritFalcons, and NAVI, representing the absolute elite of competitive Counter-Strike.

What makes IEM Cologne 2025 particularly exciting is its strategic timing after the summer break, which means several teams may showcase new lineups and strategies. However, teams like Vitality enter as heavy favorites, boasting an incredible 30-match win streak and multiple consecutive tournament victories in the first half of 2025. The tournament’s significance extends beyond prize money, as it’s part of the ESL Grand Slam Season 6 Events and holds S-Tier status in the competitive hierarchy.

The LANXESS Arena, often referred to as the “Cathedral of Counter-Strike,” will once again host the playoffs from August 1-3, creating an atmosphere that’s become legendary in the esports community. With 16 teams battling through the initial play-in stage and 8 teams receiving direct invitations to the group stage, the competition promises intense matches from start to finish.

Tournament Format and Structure

IEM Cologne 2025 employs a comprehensive three-stage format designed to showcase the best competitive Counter-Strike action.

Stage 1 – Play-In (July 23-25)
The tournament begins with 16 teams competing in a double-elimination bracket format. All matches are best-of-three (Bo3) series, with only the top eight teams advancing to Stage 2. This stage ensures that only the most deserving teams progress to face the directly invited elite squads.

Stage 2 – Group Stage (July 26-30)
Stage 2 features 16 teams split into two double-elimination groups, combining the eight qualifiers from Stage 1 with eight directly invited teams. Each group operates under the GSL (Global StarCraft League) format, with all matches remaining Bo3. The top three teams from each group advance to the playoffs, with group winners securing direct advancement to the semifinals.

Playoffs (August 1-3)
The playoffs feature a single-elimination bracket with six qualified teams. Group stage winners advance directly to the semifinals, while second and third-place finishers compete in the quarterfinals as high seeds and low seeds, respectively. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are Bo3, while the grand final is an epic best-of-five series.

Prize Distribution and Stakes

The tournament’s $1,000,000 USD prize pool is distributed across all participating teams, with significant rewards even for early-stage competitors. The champion receives $400,000, while the runner-up takes home $180,000. Third place earns $80,000, and even teams finishing in positions 21st-24th receive $2,500.

This prize structure ensures that every match carries meaningful stakes, from the opening play-in rounds to the grand final. The substantial financial rewards reflect IEM Cologne’s status as one of Counter-Strike’s premier events and demonstrate ESL’s commitment to supporting the competitive scene.
