The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a major leap forward for Nintendo fans, offering users a versatile platform to play three distinct types of games—exclusive Switch 2 titles, backward-compatible Nintendo Switch 1 games, and enhanced Switch 2 Edition versions of existing titles. This new approach opens up fresh opportunities for gamers to revisit older favorites with upgraded visuals, smoother performance, and even brand-new content.
What sets the Switch 2 apart is Nintendo’s new focus on enhanced editions of previous games, giving legacy titles a facelift that takes advantage of the new hardware. These upgraded editions, called Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, will launch with the new console and continue expanding its library well into the future.
What is a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Game and Upgrade?
A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game is more than just a simple re-release. According to Nintendo, these are special bundles that combine the original Switch 1 game with an upgrade pack specifically designed to unlock enhanced features on Switch 2. These bundles vary from game to game, with enhancements ranging from visual upgrades to new modes and performance boosts.
Unlike standard cross-generation releases that might work identically on both systems, Switch 2 Edition titles are built to maximize the potential of Switch 2’s hardware. For most titles, this means higher resolutions, improved frame rates, faster load times, and HDR support. Some games also come with new features, story content, or modes that are only accessible on the new console.
Nintendo emphasizes that these enhancements are designed to “take advantage of the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2 system,” making Switch 2 Edition games a must-have for anyone upgrading their console.

Every Confirmed Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Game and Upgrade
Nintendo has already revealed six titles that will launch with Switch 2 Edition upgrades, with more expected after the console’s release. Here’s a breakdown of each game and what enhancements are included:
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Launching alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, this title will receive better frame rates, enhanced resolution, faster load times, and HDR support. It also adds compatibility with the Zelda Notes feature in the Nintendo Switch App, allowing players to interact with the game using maps, notes, and more. - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
This sequel will also receive similar upgrades and expanded Zelda Notes features. Players can save and share custom crafting designs using QR codes, enhancing community interaction. - Super Mario Party Jamboree
The Switch 2 Edition, launching July 24, introduces new content such as CameraPlay mini-games and support for Joy-Con 2’s mouse controls. The game will also be compatible with GameShare, along with visual and performance upgrades. - Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Scheduled for release on August 28, Kirby’s Switch 2 Edition includes improved visuals and performance, plus a new story expansion titled Star-Crossed World. - Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Launching in late 2025, this game will be available on both Switch 1 and 2. However, the Switch 2 Edition offers better resolution and smoother performance for a superior experience. - Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
As one of the most anticipated titles, Metroid Prime 4 will support both consoles. The Switch 2 Edition brings mouse control support, high-resolution textures, faster loading, and dual gameplay modes:- Quality Mode: 60 FPS in 4K (docked) or 1080p (handheld)
- Performance Mode: 120 FPS at 1080p (docked) or 720p (handheld)

Do You Need to Repurchase Games You Already Own?
The good news is, you don’t have to rebuy games you already own. If a game you purchased previously gets a Switch 2 Edition, you can simply buy the corresponding upgrade pack from the Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, or retailers.
According to Nintendo, “If you already have the original Nintendo Switch game—as either a physical or digital version—you can upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by purchasing the game’s upgrade pack.” You’ll still be able to play the original version on the Switch 1, but the upgraded features will be accessible only on the Switch 2.
Additionally, players with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription will receive some upgrades for free, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Some other games, such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, will also get free performance updates for the new system, although these won’t be full Switch 2 Editions.
