Duke’s Andie Smith Claims First Collegiate Title as Blue Devils Dominate Tar Heel Invitational

Smith’s Breakthrough Victory

Duke junior Andie Smith achieved a career milestone at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, claiming her first collegiate title in style. Competing on the 6,081-yard, par-70 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C., Smith delivered an impressive performance with rounds of 68, 66, and 69, culminating in a 7-under-par total of 203. Her five-stroke victory not only secured individual glory but also contributed to Duke’s team triumph. The Blue Devils edged out Michigan State and Wake Forest by three strokes with a final round of even-par 280, marking their 17th win in the tournament’s history and their first since 2018.

Historic Team Performance

The Blue Devils’ dominance in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational is nothing new. With this being their 17th victory in the event, Duke further solidified its legacy as a powerhouse in women’s golf. Smith became the 13th Duke player to win the individual title at this tournament, joining an elite list of former champions. Under the leadership of head coach Dan Brooks, now in his 41st season, the team has consistently delivered top performances. Brooks has guided Duke to at least one victory in 39 seasons, bringing his career total to 144 team wins.

How Smith Secured Victory

Smith’s journey to her maiden title showcased resilience and skill. Starting her final round on hole No. 5, she encountered challenges with a bogey on No. 13 and consecutive dropped shots on No. 16 and No. 17. However, Smith bounced back with a remarkable stretch of three birdies on holes No. 1-3, regaining her lead. She wrapped up her round with 15 greens hit, nine fairways, and 31 putts, sealing her victory in style.

Standout Performances from the Blue Devils

Freshman Carla De Troia also had a memorable outing, firing a bogey-free 1-under 69, her lowest score as a Blue Devil. The Paris native showcased her composure with a clutch birdie sand save on the par-5 eighth hole. Sophomore Katie Li delivered a steady even-par 70, finishing tied for 11th with a total of 215. Highlights of her round included a 24-foot birdie putt on No. 14 and a precise wedge shot on No. 3. Senior Rylie Heflin overcame adversity with a 2-over 72, rebounding from a double bogey on No. 12 to sink a birdie on No. 13 and demonstrate her resilience with solid par saves.

The Blue Devils excelled in par-4 scoring with a 4.17 average, recording 38 birdies and leading the tournament in key statistical categories. Smith’s 14 birdies, the highest in the field, underscored her consistency and dominance.

Looking Ahead

With their fall season nearing its conclusion, Duke will head to the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., from October 25-27. The Blue Devils aim to build on their momentum and continue their winning ways.
