Villanova Volleyball Gears Up for BIG EAST Tournament Showdown

Wildcats Prepare for Semifinal Clash Against Marquette

For the first time since 2019, the Villanova Wildcats (17-13, 9-9 BIG EAST) are back in the BIG EAST Semifinals, marking their 15th appearance in the tournament’s history. The Wildcats will go head-to-head against the second-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Eastern at D.J. Sokol Arena. With momentum on their side, Villanova aims to continue their postseason run and secure a spot in the championship match.

Villanova’s Grit and Determination Shine in Omaha

The Wildcats’ success this season has stemmed from their teamwork, depth, and ability to outlast strong opponents. These qualities were on full display during their hard-fought victory over the Connecticut Huskies in the BIG EAST First Round. The five-set thriller, which lasted three hours, was Villanova’s longest match of the season and marked their first playoff win since 2015.

Freshman standout Campbell McKinnon delivered a career-best performance with 15 kills and 11 blocks, while senior libero Elizabeth Feczko recorded 20 digs and 10 assists. Cat Young and Abby Harrell also contributed double-digit kills and digs, while setters Alyssa Nelson and Taylor Jakubowski each notched their eighth double-double of the season. Under head coach Josh Steinbach, the Wildcats displayed remarkable resilience to advance to the semifinals.

Villanova Players Earn Prestigious All-Conference Honors

Villanova’s strong season was further validated with two players receiving All-BIG EAST honors. Sophomore outside hitter Abby Harrell was selected for the All-BIG EAST Team for the second consecutive year, while McKinnon earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Villanova joined Creighton, Connecticut, DePaul, and Marquette as one of five teams with multiple players recognized in the all-conference selections.

This marks the 14th time in Villanova volleyball history that at least two players have received all-conference honors. Harrell’s recognition follows her outstanding performance alongside Kiera Booth in 2023. The accolades highlight Villanova’s ability to develop and showcase top-tier talent on a conference level.

Villanova’s Freshman Class Making a Significant Impact

Villanova’s newest class of players has played a crucial role in the team’s success. Five out of six freshmen have contributed significantly throughout the season. McKinnon has emerged as the team’s top blocker, while Nelson was a contender for BIG EAST Setter of the Year. Young has been a versatile presence, ranking in the top five of four statistical categories for the Wildcats. Additionally, Taylor Lewis has recorded multiple kills in 21 matches, and Lola Buck-Taylor has excelled in the libero role following an NCAA rule change, appearing in 24 matches this season.

Marquette: A Formidable Opponent

The Golden Eagles (22-7, 16-2 BIG EAST) have been one of the top teams in the conference all season, consistently appearing in the national top 25 rankings. Marquette swept Villanova in both regular-season matchups and leads the all-time series 26-4. The last time the teams met in the postseason was in the 2019 semifinals, where Marquette secured a sweep.

Marquette boasts an impressive roster, including standout setter Yadhira Anchante, who has recorded 1,052 assists and 324 digs. The team also features unanimous All-BIG EAST selections Aubrey Hamilton (353 kills) and Hattie Bray (310 points, 84 blocks). Villanova will need to bring their best performance to overcome this formidable opponent and advance to the final.
