League of Legends’ fan-favorite game mode, the Arena, is making a triumphant comeback with Patch 25.05. While the core gameplay remains largely unchanged, Riot Games has introduced significant updates, including new mechanics, map changes, and a revamped progression system. These enhancements aim to keep the game mode fresh and engaging for players.
Following extensive community feedback, Riot has rebranded the mode as “Arena – The Grand Reckoning” and implemented numerous improvements based on player suggestions.
What is Arena – The Grand Reckoning in League of Legends?
Arena is a unique 16-player mode structured as 2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2. Players compete in pairs, battling against other teams in multiple rounds, gradually depleting opponents’ team health until only one duo remains victorious.
During the match, players can select augments—similar to Teamfight Tactics (TFT)—allowing for mid-game strategy adjustments. Additionally, Arena features a progression system where players earn ‘Fame’ based on their performance. Accumulating Fame unlocks perks such as new augments and other gameplay enhancements, making each match more dynamic and rewarding.
What’s New in League of Legends Arena – The Grand Reckoning?
While the general gameplay remains familiar, several crucial changes set this season apart:
1. New Map Location
The previous Arena maps, Rings of Wrath, have been replaced by “The Grand Reckoning.” Unlike earlier floating arenas, these new battlegrounds are grounded, offering a fresh visual experience and updated designs based on community feedback.

2. Introduction of Guests of Honor
Last season featured Cameos, but this mechanic has now been replaced with Guests of Honor. During certain rounds, champions will appear as Guests, and all players will vote on which one stays. The chosen Guest introduces a unique rule that influences the remainder of the match. If the game lasts long enough, up to two Guests may appear.
3. Revamped Progression System
Riot has introduced a structured progression system marking the start of Arena Season One. The primary way to advance is by earning Fame through gameplay performance. Additionally, each champion now has missions that provide Fame boosts.
Here’s a breakdown of what players unlock at each Fame level:
- Level 1: Overflow (Silver Augment) added to pool
- Level 2: Hattrick (Gold Augment) added to pool
- Level 3: Matchup Intro upgrade
- Level 4: Slow and Steady (Gold Augment) added to pool
- Level 5: 1 Reroll
- Level 6: Matchup Intro upgrade
- Level 7: And My Axe (Gold Augment) added to pool
- Level 8: Transmute: Chaos (Prismatic Augment) added to pool
- Level 9: Matchup Intro upgrade
Players will also notice new intro cards before matchups, similar to Summoner’s Rift loading screens. These intro cards can be upgraded as players earn Fame, showcasing Arena mastery.
4. Additional Gameplay Adjustments
Other minor changes include:
- Champion Mastery progression now counts within Arena matches.
- Arena tie-in missions connected to the battle pass.
- The Arena God Challenge retains progress from previous releases, meaning players don’t need to restart.
- Removal of Gladiator Points/Ranks due to low player engagement and overlap with the new Fame system.

Arena – The Grand Reckoning Schedule
The arena will be available from March 5, 2025, to April 29, 2025.
At present, there is no confirmed return date after this event ends. If you want to experience Arena – The Grand Reckoning, it’s best to jump in while the mode is live.
