Spartans Secure Sixth Place After First Round in Wilmington, N.C.

East Lansing, Mich. – The Michigan State women’s golf team made a strong impression in the opening round of The Landfall Tradition, scoring a 3-over-par 291 to secure a tie for sixth place in a competitive 17-team field. The prestigious 54-hole tournament is being held at the picturesque Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., where top collegiate teams from across the nation compete on the challenging par-72, 6,178-yard layout.

The three-day event tests the skills of the participating golfers, with Michigan State showing resilience in a field stacked with talent. The Spartans will look to build on their solid start as play resumes on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. EST.

Tournament Leaders and Standings

As the first round concluded, Florida State and Duke emerged as the early front-runners, sharing the lead at 9-under-par 279. North Carolina follows closely behind at 8-under-par 280, while Ole Miss holds fourth place at 6-under-par 282. Clemson rounds out the top five with a 1-under-par 287.

Michigan State, tied for sixth place with NC State at 3-over-par 291, remains within striking distance of the leaders as the tournament progresses. With two rounds left to play, the Spartans are well-positioned to make a push up the leaderboard.

Michigan State’s Standout Performances

Senior Katie Lu led the way for Michigan State, finishing the first round in a tie for ninth place after carding an impressive 2-under-par 70. Her performance set the tone for the team and placed her among the top individual competitors in the tournament.

Junior Paula Balanzategui delivered a solid even-par 72, placing her in a tie for 22nd. Meanwhile, junior Taylor Kehoe sits in 45th place after shooting a 2-over-par 74. Senior Brooke Biermann completed the round tied for 52nd with a 3-over-par 75.

Freshman Catalina Monroy finished the day at 8-over-par 80, placing her in 83rd. Sophomore Ana Sofia Murcia, competing individually, matched Kehoe’s score with a 2-over-par 74, also securing a tie for 45th place.
