Brown University’s quarterback, Jake Willcox, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Helmet Award by the New England Football Writers (NEFW) for his outstanding performance in a dramatic 31-28 victory over Harvard. The Gold Helmet is given to the top Division I (FBS and FCS) player in New England each week, recognizing Willcox’s pivotal role in his team’s remarkable comeback.
A Career-Defining Performance
Jake Willcox‘s performance against Harvard was truly extraordinary, showcasing both his passing and rushing abilities. He completed 21 of 37 passes, accumulating 288 yards through the air and throwing three critical touchdown passes. Additionally, Willcox rushed for 52 yards, a career-high, making him the leading rusher for Brown in the game.
Despite the Bears facing a significant 28-10 deficit late in the third quarter, Willcox remained composed and orchestrated a remarkable comeback. The first step came with a 75-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Matt Childs, which helped cut Harvard’s lead and sparked Brown’s offensive resurgence.

Rallying for the Comeback
The momentum swung in favor of Brown in the fourth quarter, with Willcox continuing to make plays. With just over five minutes left in the game, he connected with Mark Mahoney for a crucial nine-yard touchdown that reduced the deficit to just five points. Then, as time dwindled down to under 30 seconds, Brown’s special teams played a pivotal role in giving the Bears one last shot at victory.
On the very first play of the final drive, Willcox hit Mahoney again for a 27-yard touchdown pass, putting Brown ahead for the first time in the game. To complete the stunning comeback, Willcox and Mahoney teamed up once more for a successful two-point conversion, sealing a 21-point unanswered run and giving the Bears a 31-28 win.
Looking Ahead: Brown vs. Bryant
After this incredible win, Willcox and the Brown Bears are set to face Bryant University at Richard Gouse Field in Brown Stadium on Saturday, October 5. The matchup will be part of Youth Day and Rhode Island Educators’ Appreciation Day, with the game scheduled to kick off at noon. Fans are eager to see if Willcox can continue his excellent play and lead the Bears to another victory.
This dramatic comeback not only cemented Jake Willcox’s place as a key player for Brown University but also earned him widespread recognition in the New England football community. His leadership and game-changing performance in the win against Harvard were crucial in securing him the Gold Helmet Award.
